By now, you probably know I love reading literature as much as I love writing in any way, shape, or form, so the release of Harper Lee's second, controversial novel Go Set a Watchman this week did NOT escape my notice. I haven't decided whether to read it or not due to the concerns about whether Ms. Lee freely and willingly allowed this novel to be published, but I admit to reading some of the spoilers.
Atticus Finch turned out to be a racist in his old age! Can racists defend innocent black men from rape charges? This one did. Why? Probably because like most of us, he's not all bad; but he's not all good, either. Atticus had a dark side, and so do we. He could overcome it, and so can we.
