Note: I am not a horticulture expert, but a quick survey of water lily facts online revealed that water lilies are of the plant type Nymphaeales. This is significant because Nymphaeales are basal angiosperms. Basal angiosperms are the first flowering plants first to diverge from the ancestral angiosperm.
