Random Thoughts on John 2:1-11 from a Lector

Yesterday, I read the scripture at church and made a mistake (horrors!). I completed a sentence I thought was unfinished in my copy. I recited:  Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons of water. I added the water in. In fact, the next sentence has Jesus telling the servants to fill the stone water jars to the brim with water. Other than I roll my eyes at myself when I make a mistake reading, there is nothing remarkable about this mistake. BUT I began wondering why the jugs were not already full. Why?
