I’m participating in Disciple Bible Study, a 34 week intensive. For five days, we have different readings. I have decided to document my initial noticings from a close reading of the scripture. Well, an attempt at a close reading.
Week 10 Theme: God Warns the People
Readings: Amos 1-4
First, from my Bible's notes. "We see in him (Amos) the first example of the prophets as the nation's conscience, condemning those in positions of power and influence for ill-treatment of those who cannot defend themselves."
- 1:1 – Amos was a shepherd. Puts him in the Davidic line, doesn't it?
- 1:9 – The covenant of kinship is broken. We really are our brother's keeper!
- 2:12 – Made the holy people do the opposite of their vows. Bad Israel!
- 3:2 – "You only have I known of all the families of the earth." That certainly makes Israel special.
