"Learn to see me as a brother instead of two distant strangers And that's how it's supposed to be."

Text:

I, Too
by Langston Hughes

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow,
I'll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody'll dare
Say to me,
"Eat in the kitchen,"
Then.

Besides,
They'll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed--

I, too, am America.

Scripture Readings
Amost 6:1-8
2 Corinthians 8:1-15
Isaiah 12:2-6

12Now if there is a willingness to help, give within your means. That’s perfectly acceptable. No one expects you to go without or borrow to give. 13-14The objective is not to go under so others will have some relief; the objective is to use this opportunity today to supply their needs out of your abundance. One day it may be the other way around, and they will need to supply your needs from what they have. That’s equality. --2 Corinthians 8:12-14

Prayers

Taking Sabbath from the news cycle today. I offer a modified prayer from The Book of Common Worship.

2015.12.10

We are given prophets
to cry out for justice and mercy.
Open our ears to hear them,
and to follow the truth they speak,
lest we support injustice to secure our own well-being.
Give prophets words of fire,
but love as well.
Though the speak alone
Let them know we stand with them.
Let us be transformed from ME to WE
and let peace prevail on earth.
So mote it be.

Lord’s Prayer
Translation by Neil Douglas Klotz, Sufi

O Birther! Creator of the Cosmos,
Focus your light within us— make it useful:
Create your reign of unity now-
Your one desire then acts with ours,
as in all light, so in all forms.
Grant what we need each day in bread and insight.
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
as we release the strands we hold
of others’ guilt.
Don’t let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
the power and the life to do,
the song that beautifies all,
from age to age it renews.
Truly— power to these statements—
may they be the ground from which all
my actions grow: Amen.

May Peace Prevail on Earth. Amen. So mote it be.

Notes:
"Amen" means "may it be so."
"May peace prevail on earth." is an addition inspired by a practice Michael Dickel does.
"So mote it be." is an addition inspired by a practice Deborah Globus, LaPadre, does.
BIBOLove is an addition attributed to the work of Soyinka Rahim, InterPlay practice, BIBOLove
