Daily Practice 2017.07.07

I have taken to not watching the news. It is entirely a self-defense mechanism. I will read the news but I am not going to watch it. Nor will I watch the videos of various people being shot and killed. To me, that is like participating in a modern day lynching. And reading comments is far beyond what my constitution can handle.

I did read, however, that the Polish President's wife, Agata Kornhauser-Duda, snubbed our President and shook hands with Melania. Later in the day, President Duda tweeted that his wife did shake hands with the US President. Saying, "Contrary to some surprising reports my wife did shake hands with Mrs. and Mr. Trump @POTUS after a great visit. Let's FIGHT FAKE NEWS."

There is so much room for wiggle room within this statement. My imagination has taken a flight of fancy...

...Agata Kornhauser-Duda snubs the US President, receives feedback from spouse and others, is pressured into shaking hands with Mrs. and Mr. Trump after a great visit.

...Agata Kornhauser-Duda reaches out to shake Mrs. Trump's hand not realizing Mr. Trump is standing there with his hand outstretched to shake, because she is delighted to see a First Lady who is Eastern European

...The news media shows a clip only of the part of the news they like and is indeed Fake News. She could easily have turned towards Mr. Trump after shaking Mrs. Trump's hand. The videos were made where this would have happened with Agata Kornhauser-Duda's body completely blocking the potential handshake

Anyway. There is a good deal of truth to the idea that there is FAKE NEWS. And a great deal of the fakeness is produced by government figures from the bottom to the President. Nobody is without fault. It is in such a time as this that our news media must strive to the highest standard.

And we must strive too. It is a time to use our imagination and fill in the details with multiple possibilities. Such as a close reading of the tweet from Mr. Duda. A close reading says Mr. Trump's hand was shook after a great visit. There is some ambiguity because his grammar may simply not be up to the challenge of expressing what he wanted to express. So not only must we strive to use our imagination, we need to do a close reading, and we need to allow a bit of grace. This same grace must be extended to the possibility that the media did not have access to every angle of the video and/or photographs. And of course, we must ask our media to allow for the grace of the possibility that they don't know everything and that they should not do reporting off of a single angle of a photograph.

Now, I don't really want to give grace to some of the folks involved in our government. I find the policies, ethics, and morals of Mr. Trump to be anathema to everything I believe in. But I don't really want to live vicariously as a titillated public that takes delight that someone might be snubbed.

How will you read today?

Let my heart rise up to meet mercy, my voice to meet compassion, my hands to meet action.

“I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”
― Albert Einstein

Weekly prayer focus comes from the World Council of Churches prayer cycle. We know the world needs to be surrounded with prayer and positive thought. This allows us to work through the world country by country. We focus on one set of countries per week with the same prayer, lifting them up. I encourage you to fill this in however you see it.

Let us pray.

We know that we fail to live up to being makers of peace. Let us bring in rather than push out, be invitational rather than confrontational--seeing signs of life while decrying the desecration of hope.

For the countries of Sudan, South Sudan, and Uganda. For the countries of ________________________

For signs of hope and peace, we pray for ________________________

For the oppressed and weary, we pray for ________________________

For those we love, those we hate and those we are indifferent to
For the transformation from ME to WE

Let peace prevail on earth.
So may it be.

Lord’s Prayer:

Translation by Neil Douglas Klotz, Sufi

O Birther! Creator of the Cosmos,
Focus your light within us— make it useful:
Create your reign of unity now-
Your one desire then acts with ours,
as in all light, so in all forms.
Grant what we need each day in bread and insight.
Loose the cords of mistakes binding us,
as we release the strands we hold of others’ guilt.
Don’t let surface things delude us,
But free us from what holds us back.
From you is born all ruling will,
the power and the life to do,
the song that beautifies all,
from age to age it renews.
Truly— power to these statements—
may they be the ground from which all
my actions grow: Amen.

May Peace Prevail on Earth. Amen. So mote it be.
