The first “You Can Be Good Without God” placard was placed on the side of a city bus by Jesus Christ sometime during the first quarter of the first century CE. Well … OK … technically speaking, that is not true: there were neither placards nor city buses to put them on in the first century CE. But everything else about the first sentence is true. What Jesus actually did, according to the Gospel of Matthew, was to teach “You Can Be Good Without God” in the famous Parable of the Sheep and the Goats … which around a hundred generations of preachers and homilists then proceeded to misinterpret by getting the story exactly, precisely 180 degrees “bass-ackwards”. Today is the day that 10000 Poets for Change come together to speak in many smaller voices amplified in one large voice. In the words of Michael Dickel:
We seek through our art to do a bit of old-fashioned consciousness raising, to stimulate thought and action leading to the kind of change that is sustainable, compassionate and just, and to engage in the important theme of the issues facing humanity today—but all with a goal to alleviate suffering and foster peace. We don’t want to just “talk about it,” we want words, art and music that help us take action in some way for positive change wherever we are in our lives, in our world.

Well the New Year is almost upon us and t has been an eventful, bust mostly violent, one. In 2014 it seems we have had more violence than peace, despite the efforts of many. We have seen hate take over our streets and increase in our government. Peace on Earth just doesn’t seem to be in our hearts for this baby New Year.
This last year we have seen too many senseless deaths, demonstrations, hateful rhetoric, and downright meanness. There has been little peace in our world of late. But this small online community has been a refuge for some. We have offered moments of personal stillness in the rush of our daily lives. Yet...
