Of Rest and School

Introducing a new writer joining our community - Colin Stewart! He is known as "chocolatebarsforthoughts." Please welcome him! ~Terri, aka CloakedMonk

Sometimes our lives turn into a whirlwind of things we want to do.

Or, on the opposite side of that, things we have no interest in doing.

The balance we must find between self-care, motivation, reliability, and responsibility isn’t simple. It’s tricky and complicated and I haven’t found it yet. Maybe I will someday. Maybe I won’t. Have you?

I often find that a day of rest isn’t always what you expect. Rest doesn’t mean to sleep, or to do nothing. My two favourite definitions of rest are relief or freedom, especially from anything that wearies, troubles, or disturbs; and mental or spiritual calm: tranquility.

Rest is tranquility.

School, which I have on Saturdays from eight in the morning to seven at night, is not tranquil. At all. It’s stressful and makes me anxious and I get frustrated and nervous. I have to do well, I have to be on time, I have to try my hardest. School, for me, is the complete antonym of rest. And yet that’s where I’ll be at on this day because of responsibility and commitment.

Even with everything I’ll be running around school doing, this doesn’t mean I can’t find time to rest. I can rest during lunch, take a moment to calm my mind before a new project is started, write or doodle when not actively doing something, or even wait to rest until I am home for the evening.

We claim that it’s hard, but finding tranquility in your life isn’t difficult if you take a moment to let go.

walk a labyrinth in your mind

there’s always a way

always darkness

always light
