TGIF: Gratitude for Christmas at the Shelter

Merry Christmas! I celebrate Christmas both culturally and spiritually so I wish you blessings on this day. Your beliefs may vary. I am grateful for the lessons I have learned about inclusivity and sensitivity. I love Christmas for many reasons and I know that others may or may not share love for the day or the season as I do.

Today especially though I am grateful that Christmas exists as a season to share, to love, and to give. I am waking up at the shelter this morning. The women and children that stay here will be greeted with gifts and stockings donated by hearts who care that they be included in the festivities surrounding them. This warms my heart.

But it is a particular gift that I am grateful for today. Last night each woman I spoke to did not know what they were going to do on Christmas Day to stay warm. The shelter is run by volunteers and closes every day from 8am to 7pm. A loving special volunteer is coming to stay with the residents all day tomorrow as a surprise. The shelter will be open and moms and kids will be warm. It looks like this may be a very cold day too.

It breaks my heart that kids (anyone really but the kids get to me in a deep way) would be wandering the streets looking for some place to go inside to warm up. On Christmas it just seems to defy all that Christmas is. I am so grateful for this gift that I could not give but someone else can.

Warm and Merry Christmas to All

A tree of love
