Gratitude for a Gas Fireplace

February was a cold month for the Pacific Northwest, colder than I remember it usually being. After almost fourteen years in this house, we decided to add a blower to our gas fireplace. I am amazed at how much warmer our family room is while the it is blowing the heat out from the tiny flames. And I am grateful for my husband who is quite familiar with electricity and installed it himself.

It does make me think of those who have no place to call home, though. How cold this month has been for them. So many women and children and men outside. Many single mothers with jobs trying to raise children and not being able to afford housing. And others locked in cages within their own heads because of our mental health system.

While my heart and prayers go with them, that is not enough. I am working to become healthier so that I can take action again. Funny that my new blower is helping me do just that.

When friendship disappears then there is a space left open to that awful loneliness of the outside world which is like the cold space between the planets. It is an air in which men perish utterly. Hilaire Belloc
